KATA REFERENCE

The root forms of Shizenryu

What it is

Mara is Shizenryu's own kata — a structured solo routine created by Ian to give disciplined, Japanese-style solo training without the need to learn a long list of kata that often repeat the same movements. It focuses on the essential tools and body movements required for the partner work of Kumite. It is essentially a solo boxing drill that develops:

  • Breath timing
  • Balance
  • Weight shifting
  • Rotational movement
  • Posture and alignment
  • Flow of defence and counter strike
  • Efficiency of movement

It began as a task: one solo karate routine to shape up a club strong in sensitivity but light on structure, drilled every Sunday until it earned its place in the syllabus. It is the first kata a Shizenryu student learns and the last one they stop refining.

How it grows with you

Mara is learned in numbered stages that track the belts: Mara 1–4 at 9th Kyu, 1–6 at 8th, 1–8 at 7th, 1–10 at 6th, 1–12 at 5th, and complete from 4th Kyu. From there the kata turns inward: 2nd Kyu asks for mastery over subtle body torsion; Shodan asks for improved movement and transitions. A full run-through takes about one minute.

Study notes

From the earliest stages, practise pulling back and using mae-geri to change sides. Mara is not only solo work — it feeds directly into partner practice as the Mara reflex flow drill (Hansha Kumite), which must be shown complete from 2nd Kyu. If your Mara is hollow, your contact reflexes will be too.

“Mara was added to the syllabus and even incorporated into pushing hands.”— Retreat Notes, May 2026
